The 9 best Chromebooks for every budget (2021)

Chromebook has a dizzying array of configurations. Sometimes even trying to decide which options to use on a single model can be overwhelming. As a product tester, I use spreadsheets to make sure everything goes smoothly. But you shouldn’t do this, so here are some broad specifications to keep in mind.

processor: Chromebooks use six different processors, most of which you may never have heard of. There is a reason for this: these processors are slow, and they do not appear in Windows laptops. After trying a lot of Intel Celeron-based machines (usually labeled N4000), my recommendation is to choose a more powerful machine if you can afford it. Celeron’s next step is Core m3, which is the best choice for most people. If you want a more powerful and future-oriented machine, please buy i3 or i5 chips.

We are beginning to see more ARM-based Chromebooks, such as the Lenovo Duet above. I have not encountered any problems with ARM Chromebooks, but they are not as fast as Intel Core chips. There are some newer Chromebooks that use AMD’s latest Ryzen chips, and I have a good experience with them.

RAM: If you can afford it, get 8 GB of RAM, especially if you plan to run any Android apps. When I experience severe slowdowns and malfunctions, it is almost always on a Chromebook with only 4 gigs of RAM.

Screen: Get an IPS LCD display. There are still some low-end models with worse TN LCD displays, and you should avoid them. Your pixel resolution depends on the size of the screen. I have used (and recommended) some 11-inch Chromebooks with 720p displays. Because these screens are compressed into a small size, I find that their resolution is acceptable, but of course a 1080p screen will be much better.

port: Most of the things you do on Chromebooks are cloud-based, so you don’t actually have to worry too much about ports. If you want to be able to run a Chromebook with a portable battery/charger, you may need a computer that can be charged via a USB-C port, but USB-C charging is mainly suitable for mid- and higher-priced models. If you need to download a large number of files on a typical day, having a MicroSD slot to expand storage is also helpful, but this option is not widely used either.
